Metrorrhagia occurs where the menses are consistently less than four weeks or where there is bleeding at irregular intervals. When the periods consistently arrive at intervals of 21 days or fewer, polymenorrhoea is the term used. Menorrhagia is the term employed to describe abnormally long and heavy, often clotted menses at regular intervals.

Oligomenorrhoea describes the situation where the cycle is extended and periods are late, anywhere between 4 weeks to six months or more. This is often accompanied by anovulation, or lack of ovulation. In itself this is itself often a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is dealt with on a separate page. If the periods stop altogether, the term used is amenorrhoea.
