Endometriosis & Uterine Fibroid Treatment

Endometriosis and Uterine Fibroids are conditions that are not only extremely painful but can also affect your over all fertile health and well being.

Fertility Naturopath Perth: Homeopathy and Naturopathic Treatment of Fibroids, Endometriosis and Adenomyosis

Endometriosis, uterine fibroids and adenomyosis (adenomyomas) are common problems related to oestrogen dominance. The effects of oestrogen, where they are unopposed by the normal cyclical rise in progesterone, is thought to be one of the contributing factors in these complaints; and they may all be a cause of infertility.

However, the exact origin of these conditions, and the role of female hormones, is still debated. For more discussion, please see the page on the treatment of oestrogen dominant disorders.

Please bear in mind that you do not have to be a fertility case to seek our help with these complaints, as we are a general practice, treating all ages and both sexes.

They are all extremely common. At least 25 percent of women have fibroids at some stage of their life and around 15 percent have endometriosis. In infertile women, the prevalence of endometriosis is about 35 percent. It is thought these figures may be even higher, because many women suffer with period pain and heavy bleeding without seeking investigation. They know the main medical approach after “watch and wait” is surgery.

Because of this incidence, and because a large proportion of cases we see are fertility related, at this Perth naturopathic clinic we have considerable experience in treating endometriosis, adenomyomas and fibroids.

Homeopathic treatment is holistic, focusing on the person as a whole. We are never dependent on an exact diagnosis of “cause”. It is never that simple, and the homeopathic approach has its own wisdom that goes beyond the scientific reductionism that attempts to find a single reason.

Homeopathy treats the person on the mental, emotional and physical level, taking into account the effects of stress, life events and heredity to treat what we understand to be the true cause of any problem. It promotes balance, nowhere more profoundly than on the female reproductive system, and the body is then able to heal itself.

Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growths of the muscle wall of the uterus. They are also known as uterine leimyomas or myomata. They are composed of dense muscle fibres arranged in circular layers and encapsulated by smooth muscle cells.

Many cause no symptoms; but excessive bleeding or menorrhagia, heavy bearing down or dragging sensations during periods and infertility are the main problems associated with fibroids. They may also cause the miscarriage of a successful pregnancy.

The symptoms caused by fibroids depend on where they grow.

Subserosal fibroids bulge towards the outside of the uterus and may cause discomfort on surrounding organs such as the bladder and rectum.

Fibroids that grow directly below the lining cells of the uterus bulge inwards and can cause heavy or irregular bleeding. These are known as submucosal fibroids.

Intramural fibroids stay embedded within the middle wall of the uterus and cause few symptoms.

Pedunculated fibroids, which may be submucosal or subserosal in origin grow out on a stalk into the uterus and may cause infertility problems or contribute to miscarriage.

In any case of fibroids, homeopathy can assist in reducing symptoms of pain and excess bleeding and shrinking the growth. The woman feels better in herself, all symptoms of the menstrual cycle are normalised, and a state of normal fertility may then be achieved.

Endometriosis

Oestrogen promotes the growth of the womb lining or endometrium. In endometriosis this tissue can spread beyond the uterus into other areas of the body. Endometrial growths may develop on the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina, the uterine or ovarian ligaments or the Pouch of Douglas. It may even extend further and affect the ureters, bowel and bladder and beyond. This abnormal tissue is associated with chronic inflammation in the pelvic cavity and other affected areas.

Infertility or sub-fertility may result from fallopian tube blockage, adhesions or the inflammatory process of this rogue endometrial tissue.

Other symptoms include period pain (dymenorrhoea) that is resistant to the Pill and anti-inflammatory drugs, period-like pain during the month, ovulation pain always on the one side, discomfort during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), chronic pelvic pain and general fatigue. Interstitial cystitis (IC) or Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) and pelvic floor issues often coexist with endometriosis.

Successful naturopathic treatment includes a healthy dietary plan to moderate the inflammation (see below). Homeopathic remedies are able to treat the acute pain during the menses. At the same time, constitutional homeopathy treats the person as a whole, to begin the healing process on a deep level, while specific medicines may be used to modify hormonal factors contributing to oestrogen dominance.

Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis (adenomyomas) is a related condition that is akin to endometriosis and may mimic many of the signs and symptoms of fibroids.

It is caused by the presence of endometrial tissue within the muscular walls of the uterine cavity.

Symptoms include chronic pelvic pain, heavy bleeding and uterine enlargement. Bleeding into the muscular fibres (myometrium) of the uterus causes inflammation and swelling, resulting in a tender and bulky uterus.

The homeopathy and naturopathic approaches are similar as with the treatment of other oestrogen dominant disorders.

Our treatments

Naturopathy for all these problems focuses on reducing saturated fats and avoiding alcohol. Omega-3 fatty acid consumption, dietary fibre, phyto-oestrogens, cultured milk products, cabbage family vegetables are all encouraged or increased. The inclusion of bitter foods, herbs or digestive aids can increase oestrogen clearance through the liver.

Homeopathic treatment is both specific and general as always. The constitutional remedy is essential, treating the person as a whole, on all levels: mental, emotional and physical. Together with this, others may assist to normalise and regulate the menstrual cycle and treat symptoms of pain and excessive bleeding.

This integrated approach allows us to successfully treat most cases of fibroids, adenomyosis and endometriosis, reducing the troubling symptoms and helping to restore fertility.
